PHRF and handicap calculator.

Enter or paste the boats, set the start time, and score PHRF time on distance or time on time — or ORC, IRC and Portsmouth Yardstick — with the formula and its official source next to the numbers.

Free to use in your browser. No account, no app.

Formula Corrected = elapsed − PHRF rating × distance

PHRF ratings are seconds per mile: each boat’s allowance is its rating × the course distance in nautical miles, taken off its elapsed time (a negative rating adds time). Use the distance your sailing instructions give. Lowest corrected time wins.

The distance your sailing instructions give for this course.

Questions

How do I score a PHRF race?

US Sailing’s PHRF page lists time on distance and time on time as the scoring options. Time on distance: corrected time = elapsed time − rating (seconds per mile) × course distance (nautical miles). Time on time: corrected time = elapsed time × A ÷ (B + rating), with US Sailing’s recommended A 650 and B 480, 550 or 600 by the conditions, or your fleet’s own constants. Your sailing instructions say which method and which constants — ratings come from your regional PHRF fleet, not from us.

Is a lower PHRF rating faster?

Yes. A PHRF rating is in seconds per mile: the lower the number, the faster the boat, and very fast boats rate below zero. Under time on distance a boat rated 120 gets 120 seconds a mile from a boat rated 0. Ratings come from your regional PHRF fleet, which US Sailing sanctions.

How is corrected time calculated?

Time on time (ORC ToT, IRC TCC, SRS): corrected time = elapsed time × rating, and the lowest corrected time wins. Portsmouth Yardstick: corrected time = elapsed time × 1000 ÷ Portsmouth Number. Each formula is shown next to the results with a link to the official source.

Which ORC number do I use?

The time-on-time coefficient your sailing instructions specify — ORC certificates give ToT values for different course models. ORC defines ToT = 600 ÷ ToD. Time-on-distance and performance-curve scoring are not in this calculator.

Is LYS included?

Not as its own option: we only list systems whose formula we could check in an official source. If your notice of race says corrected time = elapsed × your rating, use “Other time-on-time factor”.

How do I score an average-lap Portsmouth race?

Choose Portsmouth Yardstick and fill in the laps each boat sailed. The calculator uses the RYA average-lap formula: elapsed × most laps × 1000 ÷ (PN × laps).

What about boats that finish after midnight?

A finish time earlier than the start counts as the next day. For longer races write “+1” or “+2” after the finish time, or tick “elapsed times” and enter elapsed times directly.

How are ties handled?

Corrected times are rounded to the nearest second (IRC does this). Boats with the same corrected time share the place and the next place is skipped (1, 1, 3); for points, RRS A7 adds the points of the tied places and shares them (1.5 each). Your sailing instructions may say otherwise.
